Description

Trench Art Letter Opener, stamped with “Ypres 1915.16.17” and “RFA”. The design on the other side are two flowers, one larger with leave and a smaller one facing the opposite direction.  The blade is made of brass and is set into a rifle bullet.  The term “trench art” is used to describe decorative items created by soldiers from discarded material of war.  Sometimes made as mementos, and sometimes created as gifts for family back home, trench art pieces are typically one of a kind, and not usually signed.  Ypres was a city in Belgium defended by Canadian and Algerian forces, and was the site of two horrific chlorine gas attacks by the German army in the spring of 1915.
