Imbued with both practical and symbolic meaning, salt boxes were an essential component of kitchens in days gone by. Salt had a number of uses from seasoning meals and preserving meats to extinguishing small kitchen fires. Used in kitchens all over Europe and North America, this salt box came from Eastern Canada.
